about

Ylem is a multilayer soundscape piece comprising numerous elements, but at its core has one grandiose idea - we wanted to make a piece that incorporated the radio waves from the cosmos. These radio transmissions surround us, they have been generated from the birth of the universe and continuously pour out from all areas of the universe from numerous sources and (as far was we know) will only stop when the universe reaches heat death.

We captured electromagnetic waves spanning from the most distant reaches of space through to cosmic locations near to Earth. This, by it's very nature, allowed us to sample sounds from across time, from the birth of the universe to local radio transmissions only a few miles away.

Radio transmissions were harnessed and processed by Robert Baldock. Fellow band members Emma Bowen and Neil Johnstone then added a wide variety of content including auto harps, musical saws, found recorded sound, and synthesisers.
